What is Ativan?

Ativan is the brand name of lorazepam, an anti-anxiety agent. The drug is a benzodiazepine and mild tranquilizer, sedative and central nervous system (CNS) depressant.

Ativan is manufactured in tablet form or in liquid form for muscular injection. When ingested orally, the numbing, sedative effects of the drug can be felt in approximately five minutes. When injected, the effects are felt in approximately fifteen minutes. The sensation can last up to six hours.

About Ativan Addiction

Because this medication is normally a prescribed medication, many users do not understand the highly addictive qualities of the drug. When a person starts to alter their use of the drug, and does not follow the prescribed dosage, he or she may develop an Ativan addiction.

Ativan addiction can cause deep psychological and severe physical dependence. It can also be fatal, especially when the drug is mixed with other substances such as alcohol or other drugs.

Signs of Ativan Addiction

  • Clumsiness
  • Dizziness
  • Sleeplessness
  • Unsteadiness
  • Weakness
  • Amnesia
  • Bouts of depression
  • Nausea
  • Agitation

Continual use of Ativan use result in short and long-term memory loss. Ativan users are also at risk for overdoses which can lead to lethargy, coma, respiratory problems and death.
