Demerol Addiction

If you are suffering from a Demerol addiction, you may be doing things that you normally would never have imagined yourself doing, such as:

  • Visiting multiple doctors to get numerous prescriptions for Demerol
  • Purchasing Demerol from non-medical sources
  • Forging prescriptions in order to get more of the medication
  • Frequently visiting the Emergency Room in an effort to be prescribed Demerol

Demerol addiction can quickly overtake your daily thoughts and concerns to where all you think about is the drug and how you can get more of it. If this sounds like you or one of your loved ones, treatment should be sought and administered immediately.

Demerol Addiction Side Effects

Demerol use causes certain side effects that only worsen the longer one uses the drug. When a Demerol addiction is present the following side effects can become quite severe:

  • Dizziness
  • Lightheadedness
  • Nausea / vomiting / constipation
  • Sweating
  • Uncoordinated muscle movement
  • Convulsions
  • Tremors
  • Flushed face
  • Urinary retention
  • Headache
  • Weakness
  • Dry mouth
  • Visual disturbances

Demerol Withdrawal and Overdose

Demerol is commonly prescribed for the management of moderate to severe pain, but like other pain relievers, the body will start to build up a tolerance to Demerol if it is taken over a long period of time. When this occurs, the individual will often take more of the drug in order to experience the same results. This is the foundation of Demerol addiction. As the tolerance grows, withdrawal symptoms will start every time the individual tries to stop using the drug. Common Demerol withdrawal symptoms include, but are not limited to:

  • Muscle spasms
  • Severe anxiety
  • Shivering / chills
  • Tremors
  • Insomnia
  • Profuse sweating

When Demerol withdrawal symptoms are experienced, it can become easy for the individual to simply take more of the medication to help alleviate their pain. This not only progresses their addiction, but it places them at significant risk of having an overdose. Overdosing on Demerol can lead to:

  • Slowed breathing
  • Cold, clammy skin
  • Bluish skin color
  • Fatigue
  • Weakness in the muscles
  • Slow heartbeat
  • Sleepiness
  • Coma
